The Moor to Sea Sportive takes place on open public roads. All bicycles must be roadworthy and in good working order. We strongly recommend that you have your bike serviced by a qualified bicycle mechanic prior to taking part in this event. Don't leave things to the last minute, book your bike in for service with your local bike shop nice and early. Ideally you should have your bike back from service a week or two prior to the event so that you have a chance to ride it and check you are happy with everything well before the Sportive day.

Can I use a Mountian Bike (MTB)?

Yes, mountain bikes are premitted. We would recommend that you use higher tyre pressures than you would for off-road use. If you are able, change the tyres for ones that are narrower and have a smoother tread pattern. This will lower your rolling resistance and make things easier for you. If your bike has the option, lock out the suspension as this will also help to improve your performance on tarmac roads.

Can I use a Hybrid Bike?

Yes, hybrid bikes a absolutly fine for taking part in the Moor to Sea Sportive. We would recommend that you run your tyres on a higher tyre pressure to help reduce rolling resistance.

Can I use a Triathlon Bike?

No, sorry, triathlon bikes, with forward facing bars are not permitted. These bikes are designed for solo riding. The ride position and reduced handling efficiency are not suited to these routes and the forward facing bars present a risk to other participants.

What about Areobars or Tri-Bars?

Clip on aerobars, TT Bars, or Tri-Bars are not permitted in this sportive unless they are the closed loop style. If they are forward facing parallel bars (which almost all are), they are not permitted, sorry.

Can I use a Tandem?

Yes, tandem bikes are permitted to be used in the Moor to Sea Sportive. Please be aware that the routes have some steep climbs. Make sure both riders have the appropriate level of fitness for the chosen route.

Can I use an Electric Bike (eBike)?

Yes, we permit electric bikes (eBikes). Please note, we do not provide charging points so you must ensure your bike is fully charged before you arrive. You will also need to check that your battery life is suitable for the route you have chosen. Pedaling an eBike with a flat battery around the Moor to Sea routes would not be an easy task!

Other bicycles that are NOT suitable:

  • Tricycles (some narrow roads are used so a tricycle would not be suitable).
  • BMX bikes
  • Recumbent bikes
  • Time Trial Bikes (see Triathlon Bikes)
